Sorbus was born on Friday January 18th, 2013, to the sounds of a five-day festival. The festival opened with music and recitation performances by Jeesus Arimatialainen ja Tunteet and Janne Kortteinen in the freshly renovated white cube on Vaasankatu, Helsinki.
Sorbus has hosted a wide variety of events and exhibitions since that day and been a venue for 65 concerts and spoken word performances. Rap poetry, ghettotech, conceptual blues, preaching, amplified scratching of velcro costumes, intentionally ambiguous groping of an electric guitar, lullabies, rap 'n' roll and performances of all sorts have found eager audiences.
In celebration of its first anniversary Sorbus gallery presents a compilation album, a selection of previously unreleased songs, recitations and concert recordings from artists who have performed in the gallery during this first year. Eight new works have been produced and recorded especially for this album. Four of the tracks are digitized versions of live recordings from the opening festival, cut straight onto vinyl by Roope Seppälä with a custom-built vinyl record cutter.
We Got Sorbus is an overview of the best sounds seeping out from the
margins of Finnish music and spoken word art today.
All record sales will benefit the second year of Sorbus.
Sorbus is a non-profit, artist-run gallery in Helsinki, Finland.
